![]() Caribbean Endemic Birds Festival Since its inception in 2002, RSCF has sponsored Dominica's Forestry, Wildlife and Parks Division's participation in the CEBF, the broadest annual environmental outreach program for children in the Lesser Antilles (20,000 children in 2007). The program runs for one month in May, and enables children from across the island to celebrate the richness of Dominica's bird life, totaling 208 species. The program is a collective effort between Forestry, RSCF, local sponsors and the Society for the Conservation and Study of Caribbean Birds, the latter of which produces the Journal of Caribbean Ornithology. ![]() Volunteer and Internship Opportunities RSCF offers qualified students the opportunity to participate in hands-on conservation and animal management programs. 2009 Bartlett Award Winner - Bertha Vazquez A science teacher at George Washington Carver Middle School in Coral Gables, Florida, Bertha Vazquez has been awarded a national prize recognizing her leadership in integrating environmental lessons into daily education. The Richard C. Bartlett Education Award is given annually by the National Environmental Education Foundation to a teacher who serves as an inspiration and model for others. Vazquez, a science teacher for two decades, spearheaded efforts to green her school's campus, launched a recycling program at her school, led students on annual bird counts and field trips and inspired students and colleagues not just at her school but throughout the Miami-Dade County Public Schools to make "green" education part of every subject area. Environmentally themed lessons have been integrated into math, language arts, visual arts and even French classes. Full Press Release... Inspired by Bulbs! 2009 Healthy Sprouts Awards Program The National Gardening Association Healthy Sprouts Awards Program encourages the growth of health-focused youth garden programs. Sponsored by Gardener's Supply Company, the awards support school and youth garden programs that teach about nutrition and the issue of hunger in the United States. Schools or organizations applying must plan to garden in 2010 with at least 15 children (ages 3-18). Deadline October 17, 2009 Apprentice Ecologist Initiative The goal of the Apprentice Ecologist Initiative is to elevate young people (including disadvantaged and at-risk youth) into leadership roles by engaging them in environmental stewardship projects. A $500 scholarship will be awarded annually to the author of the top Apprentice Ecologist essay. |
