NEWS AND EVENTS

AUGUST 2009 - Giant Sable Project

RSCF founding boardmember Dr. Richard Estes recently participated in the capture and relocation of the last nine surviving female giant sable antelope (Hippotragus niger variani) living in Angola's Cangandala National Park. The nine are now confined with a bull, captured and airlifed via helicopter 100 miles from the Luando Reserve. The group will reside in a 2 x 2 sq km fenced enclosure within the national park. Now, full-blood sable calves can be born for the first time in over five years. During that time no sable bull was present. Instead they bred with a roan antelope bull and produced hybrid calves.
