Rescue and Relocation -
Efforts to Save the Critically Endangered Sable Antelope
Found only in central Angola, the giant sable (Hippotragus niger variani) is one of the most impressive but also one of the most critically endangered African antelopes.
Due to a massive decline in wild populations between 1970 and 2008, a relocation and recovery program was designed to create a captive breeding
group within a protected area in Cagandala National Park.
This effort was spearheaded by Angolan naturalist Pedro Vaz Pinto, and supported by the Giant Sable Conservation Fund,
corporate sponsor Esso Angola, Tusk Trust, Block 15, team veterinarian Peter Morkel and the Angolan government.
