Keeper I/Animal Care

Reports to General Curator. Part-Time (25-30 hrs/week).

 

  • Daily care and management of animals at RSCF's FL facility

  • Must have exotic animal experience

  • Duties include daily diet preparation/feeding of psittacines, primates and ungulates

  • Enclosure/property maintenance and design

  • Must be able to work well with others, be physically fit (able to lift 75 lbs), operate an ATV, and work outdoors in all weather conditions 

  • Must be available weekends and holidays 

Compensation/Benefits:  $14/hr to start with opportunity for further advancement.

Resident Senior Animal Care Specialist

Reports to General Curator. Full-time, salaried position.

At RSCF, we’re passionate about caring for animals. Our Florida facility is home to some of the world's most endangered species. We’re seeking enthusiastic, dedicated, and hard-working individuals in a wide variety of roles. Join us and play an important part on our incredible team!


As a Resident Senior Animal Care Specialist:

  • Live on-site at RSCF's ~40 acre South Florida breeding and research center

  • Responsible for providing consistent care and maintenance to all RSCF animals 

  • Work in a consistent, professional and positive manner displaying consideration, tolerance, cooperation, open communication, and reliability

  • Follow all husbandry, training, and safety protocols for the specified zoological area(s) 

  • Demonstrate the ability to safely work with a diverse collection of animals including small primates, parrots and African hoofstock. 

  • Maintain safe and sanitary animal habitat(s) and working area

  • Enter daily, weekly, and monthly records using Arks record keeping system

  • Create and administer animal enrichment to enhance animal welfare and training goals

  • Demonstrate the ability to recognize the overall health of each animal via daily observations

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and the ability to discuss the natural history of the animals

  • Deliver department seminars as needed

  • Other duties as assigned

 

What it takes to succeed:

  • Must have 3 full time years of zoological/exotic species paid animal experience

  • High School diploma or GED required (College level courses or degree preferred)

  • Must have a clean driving record and possess the ability to operate a company vehicle

  • Must be able to spend long periods of time standing and be comfortable working outdoors in a variety of conditions in the state of Florida

  • Able to frequently lift/move 50 pounds, occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds stand for prolonged periods of time

  • Flexible schedule to work weekends, holidays, early mornings, and late evenings

  • Strong written/verbal communication skills; ability to speak effectively before groups

  • Willingness to work in any animal area as assigned

INTERNSHIPS

RSCF offers hands-on, conservation-focus internships suitable for aspiring conservationists eager to get their hands dirty, and able to travel to Loxahatchee, Fl, by their own means. Open to college-enrolled junior and senior students who have a strong interest in wildlife conservation, have basic knowledge of ecological research principles and procedures, and be willing to do physically demanding outdoor work in harsh conditions. Students must be self-motivated and open to assist in all research and work-related duties. Previous experience doing field-work is a plus. On-site housing is available.
